Practicing What You Preach...when it comes to home improvement

I have said it to myself and others so many times "don't wait until you move, or it's too late, before you make improvements". The point of making improvements to your home SHOULD be for you and your families personal enjoyment. Many times however, we wait too long and the improvements come for the next owner to enjoy. At our last home we did not enjoy the newly updated bathroom and new flooring in the kitchen.. Our kids got to enjoy their personalized rooms for only a few months.  Hopefully, the new owners enjoyed the labor of our efforts.

It is with this in mind (and the pressure that my kids will be off to college before we know it) that we have begun the task of repainting their rooms and bathrooms. (I must confess that the "we" is actually my husband who is laboring as I type this). Our "goal" is to continue with updated fixtures and flooring and not wait until we sell someday in the future. An added bonus is this has inspired some clearing, cleaning and decluttering too!

So here is my challenge! Walk around your home with a notebook in hand and write down a list of things that would need to be updated "if" you were to sell someday AND what you would like to update to enjoy. Then begin to tackle the list one item at a time. The advantage of this is simple:

  • You get to enjoy improvements in your home
  • Since you aren't "rushed" by a deadline, you can shop for some good deals and sales. If kids are involved, help them see the importance of sticking to a budget for the project
  • If and when you do sell, you are ready! Then you can just focus on your move and not a HUGE to-do list

If you want to make sure you are not over improving your home for your neighborhood, give me a call and I'd love to help! (not the painting part - only the ideas!)
